ABSTRACT

Although hepatitis C virus (HCV) is usually transmitted by known parenteral routes, 40%–50% of patients have no identifiable risk factors. To determine the rate of household contacts acquiring HCV infection, we enrolled 50 anti-HCV- positive index patients and 83 of their household members, including their 49 sexual contacts. Six spouses had detectable anti-HCV; 2 of the 6 had independent risk factors for HCV infection and were excluded from statistical analysis.
