ABSTRACT

New type of chalcogenides called “composite-layered chalcogenides” with “BiMX3” (M = Ti, V, Nb, Ta; X = S, Se) formula have been prepared and characterized using X-ray powder diffraction, electron diffraction, and electric resistivity measurement. It has been suggested that the structure of the chalcogenides consists of two kinds of layers alternately and incommensurately stacked: two-atom-thick layer of AX and three-atom-thick sandwich of MX2. They have been prepared from elements by heating in silica tube and are black-grayish microcrystalline powder with luster. Their electric resistivity measured with d. c. four-probe method in the range of 1.7-300 K showed various behaviors: semiconducting, metallic, or superconducting, depending on their compositions.
