ABSTRACT

Large amount of lysozyme could be loaded in hydrogels containing phosphate groups by ionic binding between negatively-charged phosphate groups and positively-charged lysozyme. Lysozyme release from the hydrogels was influenced by the conditions such as ionic strength and pH. The rate of lysozyme release at pH 7.4 was much faster than that at pH 1.4. The lysozyme release at pH 7.4 is based on the ion exchange mechanism due to the ionization of the phosphate groups. The pH-sensitive dissociation of ionic binding resulted in the lysozyme release in response to a step-wise pH change. More... »
