ABSTRACT

Currently available surrogate markers of osteoporosis including areal bone mineral density (aBMD) measured by dual energy absorptiometry (DXA), bone turnover markers (BTMs), and fracture risk assessment tool (FRAX®) are limited for the use as targets, because those values are not directly reflecting bone strength. Because directly measuring the strength of any bone in a living human subject is not feasible, the combination of finite element analysis (FEA) and clinical computed tomography (CT) is an alternative and powerful technique for noninvasive assessment of whole bone strength. While there are several limitations including the radiation exposure, FEA has the potential to improve clinical assessment of osteoporosis.
