ABSTRACT

Physical inactivity is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease and diabetes. High levels of moderate/vigorous physical activity are associated with better health outcomes. However, there is currently a limited understanding about the relationship between light-intensity physical activity and health benefits. In this chapter, we summarize the available literature pertaining to the health impacts of light-intensity physical activity and exercise. Arterial stiffening and insulin resistance are significantly related to the daily time spent in light physical activity, especially for older people, and independent of moderate/vigorous physical activity. The effectiveness of light-intensity exercise such as yoga or stretching for improving vascular functions remains uncertain. However, yoga practice may be helpful in reducing risk factors for type 2 diabetes. More... »
