ABSTRACT

This article carries out a comparative technical efficiency analysis of investment in 27 Spanish ports using panel data over 20 years (1986–2005) and Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) methodology. Results from the Tobit model suggest that the size of port has a negative impact on the total technical and scale efficiency of the ports. The results also show that Spanish ports have experienced an improvement in the total production factor which is due exclusively to the technical efficiency change since the average annual change corresponding to the technological change is negative. Finally, another result is that ports with a greater specialisation in general cargo (containerized and non-containerized general cargo) make significantly greater progress in technological change during the period analysed.
