ABSTRACT

In winter 1993, in our laboratory, the isolation of Gramineae DNA from a sample of radiocarbon dated (3362–3136 B.C.) grass (Rollo et al, 1994a; Rollo et al., 1994b) found at the Iceman’s site during the 1992 archaeological campaign (Bagolini et al., 1995) demonstrated for the first time that the particular environment of an Alpine glacier had allowed the “molecule of life” to survive for more than five thousand years (Rollo et al., 1994a) thus opening the way to the palaeo-molecular characterization of the biological remains (Rollo et al., 1994b). This finding was later confirmed by the isolation of the DNA of the mummy itself in Munich and Oxford (Handt et al., 1994). More... »
