ABSTRACT

The S factor for the direct capture reaction 7Be(p, γ)8B can be found at astrophysical energies from the asymptotic normalization coefficients (ANC’s) which provide the normalization of the tails of the overlap functions for 8B → 7Be + p. Peripheral transfer reactions offer a technique to determine these ANC’s. Using this technique, the 10B(7Be,8B)9Be and 14N(7Be,8B)13C reactions have been used to measure the asymptotic normalization coefficient for 7Be(p, γ)8B. These results provide an indirect determination of S17(0). Analysis of the existing 9Be(p, γ)10B experimental data withtin the framework of the R-matrix method demonstrates that experimentally measured ANC’s can provide a reasonable determination of direct radiative capture rates.
