ABSTRACT

Knee instability after primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is considered an important factor for early TKA failure. However, intraoperative assessment of soft tissue balance during TKA remains difficult, and management is left largely to the surgeon’s subjective feel and experience. Whereas several quantitative measurement methods using tensor or balancer were traditionally reported, measurement was performed with unphysiological condition after TKA, assessment between bone cut surfaces with patellofemoral (PF) joint reduction. Furthermore, surgeons need to understand the clinical values of intraoperative soft tissue balance assessment.In this chapter, we introduce an offset-type TKA tensor. Its design facilitates soft tissue balance measurements, throughout the range of motion, with a reduced and repaired PF joint and femoral component in place.
