ABSTRACT

The grouping “extremely thermophilic bacteria” is ecological rather than taxonomic; these bacteria are being discussed here jointly because of the high temperature required for their cultivation and because they are found in similar locations in nature, the geothermal habitats. However, some extreme thermophiles are also found in artificial thermal habitats, such as hot-water tanks. The present discussion will be limited to two genera, Thermus and Sulfolobus. Discussed elsewhere in this book are two other groups of thermophilic bacteria: cyano-bacteria (this Handbook, Chapter 11) and Chloro-flexus (this Handbook, Chapter 17). Some other genera that are thermophilic or contain thermophilic species are: Thermomicrobium, Bacillus, Thermoplasma, Methanobacterium, Thermomonospora, Clostridium, Desulfotomaculum, Thermoactinomy-ces, Streptosporangium, Micropolyspora, Strepto-myces, Pseudonocardia, Microbispora, and Hydro-genomonas (see Tansey and Brock, 1978, for a brief review).
