ABSTRACT

Most heterotrophic bacteria are able to induce CaCO3 precipitation in laboratory experiments. Carbonate precipitation by bacteria is apparently a by-product of physiological activities that increase carbonate alkalinity, rather than a result of a specific mechanism. Bacteria can function as nucleation sites and they become embedded in growing carbonate particles, but similar particles can also form in the absence of bacteria. The shape of particles larger than so pm is the same whether they were formed abiotically or induced by bacteria. More... »
