ABSTRACT

Plants are the most important source of medicines (Balandrin and Klocke 1988); however, due to pressures of human population and economic development, the natural ecosystem is continually disturbed throughout the world. This has resulted in the depletion of naturally occurring genetic resources and germplasm pools from which future pharmaceutical and other useful products might be developed. This has caused international concern for the conservation of germ-plasm. There is an urgent need to conserve the germplasm of thousands of rare, elite, and endangered species of medicinal plants, especially those of recalcitrant types in which seed cannot be preserved. In this regard in vitro culture has played a significant role, and now there are numerous species of medicinal and aromatic plants belonging to diverse families on which micropropagation studies have been conducted.
