ABSTRACT

Sugarcane is the main sugar-producing tropical crop in the world. It belongs to the genus Saccharum, the tribe Andropogoneae, and the family Gramineae. It is grown in a number of countries (Table 1), on about 18 million ha (FAO 1992), and provides about 65% of the sugar produced (Heinz 1987).
