ABSTRACT

This paper begins with a description of some specific conceptual difficulties that students encounter in their attempts to handle certain mathematical topics. Next, the paper gives a description of the learning theory that is driving the author’s development. Then, explanations are given of the difficulties based on the learning theory. Finally, the paper describes some instructional treatments that have been designed, using computers, that are based on the given explanations. Specific examples are drawn from the teaching of discrete mathematics and abstract algebra. More... »
