ABSTRACT

Isoprenoids have been the subject of numerous studies in the biological sciences due to their role in protecting plants from herbivory, and in the atmospheric sciences due to their participation in many tropospheric chemical reactions. These hydrocarbon molecules are constructed from isoprene units produced in the mevalonic acid (MVA) pathway of plants. The enzymes of this pathway have been found in the cytoplasmic, mitochondrial, and most recently the chloroplastic compartments (Gray 1987; Kleinig 1989). It has been hypothesized that the synthesis of isoprenoid compounds through the MVA pathway is associated with the emission of isoprene from plants (Monson and Fall 1989; Loreto and Sharkey 1990). At this time, it is not known exactly how or why this isoprene is produced, but studies of its emission characteristics may prove to be a useful means of studying dynamics of the MVA pathway in plants as it relates to the synthesis of higher-order isoprenoids.
