AUTHORS ABSTRACTThe recent increase in the incidence of self-poisoning has been reported by a number of workers (Matthew, Proudfoot, Brown & Aitken, 1969). The medical managment of these patients is well known and in the United Kingdom it is officially recommended that all patients should be admitted to hospital and that psychiatric assessment be obtained prior to discharge (Central & Scottish Health Services Council, 1968). In a large number of patients no psychiatric abnormality is noted, but adverse social factors occur frequently.
