The medical managment of these patients is well known and in the United Kingdom it is officially recommended that all patients should be admitted to hospital and that psychiatric assessment be obtained prior to discharge (Central & Scottish Health Services Council, 1968). In a large number of patients no psychiatric abnormality is noted, but adverse social factors occur frequently. Therefore, in this paper, the social problems of patients living in a geographically defined area and admitted to hospital because of self-poisoning were studied.",
