ABSTRACT

Laser angioplasty (LA) holds the promise to serve as an adjunct or alternative to balloon angioplasty (BA) because it can remove the obstructing atheroma by vaporization rather than by stretching or fracturing the plaque [1]. However the results of LA have so far been limited by the low ability of conventional continuous-wave lasers (argon, Nd:YAG) to recanalise calcified occlusions and by high rate of perforation, aneurysms, spasms and early thromboses. In contrast the experimental and early clinical studies have shown, that pulsed lasers are giving rise to a precise and predictable ablation of cardiovascular tissues [2]. More... »
