ABSTRACT

The mobile population of lymphocytes in lymphoid organs may be removed by prolonged drainage of lymphocytes from the thoracic duct in rats (McGregor and Gowans, 1962) and extracorporeal irradiation of blood in calves (Cottier, Cronkite, Jansen, Rai, Singer, and Sipe, 1964) but areas containing germinal centers remain intact. Recently we (Parrott, DeSousa, and East, 1966) have drawn an analogy between the changes induced in lymphoid tissues by the above experimental procedures and the effect of neonatal thymectomy and have suggested that the primary deficiency in thymectomized animals is in the mobile or recirculating pool of lymphocytes, the population which Caffrey, Rieke, and Everett (1962) have called the “mobilizable lymphocyte pool”. Areas, termed thymus-dependent, in the mid- and deep cortex of lymph nodes and immediately around the central arteriole of the spleen are profoundly depleted of lymphocytes. But, the remainder of the follicles in the spleen and the outer cortex and cortico-medullary junction in the lymph nodes are relatively unaffected by thymectomy and these are the areas which contain germinal centers.
