Developments in the biochemistry of vision over the last quarter century may be summarized by the equations 1–3 of Scheme 1. The first reaction in the Scheme involves the combination in a dark reaction of the visual protein opsin with 11-cis retinal to form the photolabile complex rhodopsin, λmax 450–560 nm (the absorption maxima are species dependent).
