ABSTRACT

The immune system is comprised of two limbs : the humoral and the cellular (Paul 1984). The humoral limb of the immune system is the antibody-mediated response to antigenic challenge. The cellular immune response includes delayed-type hypersensitivity reactions and cell-mediated killing of tumor and virus-infected target populations. The cells which constitute the immune system are members of three families: the macrophage, the B lymphocyte, and the T lymphocyte. Macrophages serve both as phagocytic and as antigen-presenting cells. In their role as antigen presenters, macrophages process antigen and display it to lymphocytes to initiate an immune response. B lymphocytes are the antibody-producing cells. T lymphocytes subserve a variety of very different functions. They are important as regulators of both cellular and humoral immunity and serve as effectors in delayed-type hypersensitivity responses and in the destruction of virus-infected cells. More... »
