ABSTRACT

For a long time, cytochrome c, which is a slowly evolving protein, was the reference molecule to establish molecular phylogenies for very divergent eukaryotic lineages (Fitch and Margoliash 1967). Considering bacterial and chloroplastic c-type cytochomes together with cytochrome c, the first universal phylogenetic tree has been established. However, in this tree, the Eukaryote kingdom constituted nothing but a small internal branch of the bacterial tree (Dayhoff 1976): in fact, although encoded by the nucleus, the branching point of cytochrome c does not indicate the emergence of the nucleus of the Eukaryotes but that of their mitochondria: the cytochrome c gene was transferred to the nucleus from the genome of the primitive endosymbiote whose remnant cytoplasmic genes are to-day the mitochondrial DNA.
