ABSTRACT

The potential use of haploids in genetics and breeding of cotton has been emphasized (Harland 1936; Roux 1958; De Garcia 1962; Endrizzi 1966). Their production in cotton is valuable for obtaining homozygous lines in one generation, and these homozygous lines can be evaluated in the field. Because doubled haploids possess additive variance only, early-generation testing of segregating populations is possible. Haploids can also be used to increase the efficiency of existing breeding methods through improved reliability of selection. More... »
