ABSTRACT

We studied intracranial arterial wall enhancement in relation to atherosclerosis. The intracranial vertebral arteries of 30 patients and the carotid arteries of 62 patients were studied using spin-echo MRI with contrast medium and presaturation. We graded arterial wall enhancement as follows: 1, no significant enhancement; 2, faint or thin enhancement; 3, definite and thick enhancement.Enhancement of both arteries correlated with age (P<0.05). Arterial wall enhancement is related to ageing and probably due to neovascularity of atherosclerotic plaques. It should be considered separately from dissection, luminal enhancement, and other flow-related enhancement. In addition, it may open a new window through which to assess intracranial atherosclerosis and other vascular diseases. More... »
