ABSTRACT

We first stress the need for an accurate representation of the radiative processes in numerical models of the atmosphere used for climate studies and medium-range weather prediction. We then briefly illustrate some of the approximations and simplifications required for maintaining a good trade-off between computational efficiency and accuracy of the results. We then discuss uncertainties in some aspects of the radiative parametrizations likely to be important for modelling the sensitivity of the climate to variations of the solar output. Finally, we review the recent effort at studying the sensitivity of the climate to variations of the solar output from the viewpoint of the radiative transfer and of its parametrization in the general circulation models used for these studies. Depending whether the forcing is of the top-down or bottom-up kind, we argue that the recently made simulations of the Maunder minimum may not be adequate. More... »
