ABSTRACT

Many environmental problems are manifest at the regional scale. To solve these problems it is necessary to have a proper description of the hydrological processes occurring at such scales. On the other hand, formulations for and the possibility of verifying hydrological processes are often available only at a local scale, i.e., at the field-plot scale. Hence, a procedure for scaling up from the local to the regional level is required to describe properly hydrological phenomena on such large scales. To meet that goal one can generally apply one of three types of approach: scaling, stochastic analysis or inverse modeling. The purpose of this chapter is to explore the inverse modeling approach.
