ABSTRACT

The geographic and seasonal pattern of current (1945–1986) zonal mean surface temperature trends has qualitative features in common with ongoing insolation changes caused by perturbations of the earth’s orbit. Temperature and insolation increased in the low latitudes and decreased in the high ones, and showed relative decreases in autumn (SON) as opposed to spring (MAM). The magnitude of the insolation change over the last several decades is too small to have caused the observed temperature trends, which are probably due to internal oscillations of the climate system. However, it is possible that the regional climate trends were amplified when in phase with the ongoing insolation changes and suppressed when out of phase. More... »
