ABSTRACT

Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of coronary angioplasty is not the rate of failure or restenosis, but rather the rate of success. Since the early reports from Grunzig, investigators have consistently achieved long-term patency rates of 70% [1, 2]. The development of new equipment over the years has permitted cardiologists to deal with lesions not possible previously. Better support from guide catheters, more flexible, steer able guide wires, and lower profile balloons have lead to our ability to cross and dilate lesions unapproachable 10 years ago. But the overall success rates at 6 months are largely unchanged. Studies of restenosis continue to report 25%-40% recurrence rates and 3%-5% rates of abrupt closure persist [3, 4]. More... »
