ABSTRACT

The aim of the PACS-IMACS project was to evaluate the results of the introduction of PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System) in the hospital environment and to guide its evolution towards an IMACS concept (Image Management and Communication Systems).Nowadays PACS technology is available on the market and our first objective was to evaluate and assess the currently available installations in the relevant pilot sites.A characterization study has been carried out to clearly identify users and needs. The main aspects related to the integration of PACS with the HIS (Hospital Information System) have been considered to allow a bidirectional data exchange between PACS and HIS.Particular emphasis has been devoted to diagnostic image presentation in order to verify its clinical validity and to define a common technical baseline. This experience has taken place in the European PACS scenario defined by the partners.Experimental activity on sophisticated image presentation, processing and communication platform has been performed to explore new diagnostic possibilities.Results and experiences gathered during the project will be used to set up a knowledge base to enhance and to rationally manage the technology required by the implementation of IMAC systems possibly interconnected via metropolitan area networks.
