Due to losses by rapid deforestation and the depletion of genetic stocks, concerted efforts are being made to evolve innovative methods for mass clonal propagation, production of short-duration trees with a rapid turnover of biomass, induction of genetic variability for the production of novel fruit and forest trees, high-yielding medicinal and aromatic plants for the pharmaceutical industry, and other rare and elite species of plants.
