ABSTRACT

Erythropoietin (EPO) stimulates bone marrow erythropoietic progenitor cells in vitro and in vivo [1, 3]. Recombinant human EPO (rhEPO) has been used successfully to treat anemia due to renal failure [2]. It also stimulates erythropoiesis under normal conditions without EPO deficiency. EPO might be effective in accelerating regeneration of erythropoiesis after bone marrow transplantation (BMT) and thus shorten the period of red blood cell support. In an attempt to evaluate this possibility, in comparison with historical data, we administered rhEPO intravenously after allogeneic and autologous BMT. More... »
