ABSTRACT

Over the past five years relevant information on the chemical reactions of OH adducts to purine components and related radical cations has become available by using the powerful redox titration technique [O’Neill & Chapman, 1985; Jovanovic & Simic, 1989, Steenken, 1989], More recently the main decomposition products arising from the fate of the corresponding 2’-deoxyribonucleoside radicals were isolated and characterized. It was shown that the reaction of hydroxyl radicals with the base moiety of 2’-deoxyguanosine in aerated aqueous solution gave rise predominantly to an oxazolone type rearrangement product via an unstable precursor [Cadet et al, 1990].
