ABSTRACT

The interaction between fast-growing Rhizobium species and their leguminous hosts is highly specific. For example R.meliloti strains nodulate alfalfa while R.leguminosarum bv. viceae (= R.leguminosarum) form nodules on pea and vetch and R.leguminosarum bv. tritolii (= R.tritolii) on clover. R.meliloti genes required for alfalfa infection and nodulation can be classified as follows: (i) the nodABC common genes which are structurally and functionally conserved in all Rhizobium species (see Long 1989), (ii) the regulatory nodD genes which modulate the expression of nod genes as a function of specific plant signals (Gyorgypal et al 1988) and (iii) the nodFEG and nodH host-range genes. In this paper we will describe recent results on the identification, structure and function of the R.meliloti hostrange genes. In particular we will characterize a new host-range gene nodQ and will show that nodH and nodQ determine modifications of low molecular weight extracellular signals. More... »
