ABSTRACTThe pollen tube is a biological structure in which an intense cytoplasmic movement is obserbed, and cytoskeletal elements appear to be directly involved in this process. Microfilaments are responsible for organelle movement and microtubules, together with other specialized polypeptides could be involved in the transport of vesicles. Here we report on the presence of kinesin in pollen tubes. Kinesin is a force–generating protein that, as shown for animal cells, cooperates with microtubules in the movement and driving of vesicles. The presence of kinesin in pollen tubes of Nicotiana was demonstrated by immunofluorescence, using a monoclonal antibody to mammalian kinesin. A strong fluorescence reaction was specifically evident at the tube apex. More... »
