ABSTRACT

The papers in this volume and in a companion collection (Marine Microbial Foodwebs) attest to the rapid growth and progress of marine microbiology and protozoology since the mid 1970’s. An increasing number of articles dealing with models of the role of microbial systems and protozoa in plankton systems demonstrates the growth of this field. To reflect these trends the organizing committee for NATO ASI 604/87 decided to include practical and lecture sessions on modelling in the workshop programme, with the aim of a) assessing the need for and progress in modelling protozoan processes in the sea, b) introducing these models to the larger community of protozoologists, and c) identifying the kinds of information needed for better models. We review the main aspects of these sessions in this chapter. More... »
