ABSTRACT

T-lymphocyte proliferation is regulated by the T-cell growth factor interleukin 2 (IL-2) which exerts its biological effects through an interaction with high-affinity specific IL-2 receptors [1–3]. Quiescent T-lymphocytes neither produce IL-2 nor express IL-2 receptors [2, 4]. However, following immune stimulation there is transcriptional activation of both the IL-2 and IL-2 receptor genes which results in IL-2 synthesis and IL-2 receptor expression [5–7]. T-cell proliferation can then proceed via an autocrine pathway in which the population secretes and responds to its own growth factor. More... »
