ABSTRACT

This work presents a new approach to automatic face location on grayscale images with complex backgrounds. The basic idea is to search on a directional image for all the elliptical objects within a certain range of variation. This is effected through the implementation of a generalized Hough transform, which uses an elliptical annulus as a template. The experimentation carried out on 50 images taken in our laboratories show that the algorithm is robust and very efficient: a gray-level 384×288 image can be processed in a time slightly longer than 0.1 sec. on a Pentium 133 Mhz PC.
