ABSTRACT

Lovastatin (mevinolin) is a competitive inhibitor of HMG CoA (hydroxymethyl-gluturate coenzyme A) reductase. Lovastatin decreases cholesterol synthesis and increases the number of LDL (low density lipoprotein) receptors and the catabolism of LDL (1,2). A variety of clinical trials demonstrate that lovastatin administration in humans is associated with significant reductions in LDL cholesterol up to 40% (3). The efficacy of lovastatin in humans appears to be established, but additional studies in humans related to long-term safety and mechanism of action are still in progress. This report addresses several of these issues in a preliminary fashion. More... »
