ABSTRACT

The anterior pituitary gland together with the exocrine pancreas was the target for electron microscopists who wanted to investigate the ultrastructural background of biological phenomena occurring in the cell in order to elaborate secretion material (Farquhar and Wellings 1957). These authors clearly ascribed the origin of secretory granules the Golgi apparatus, and one of them — Farquhar (1961) — demonstrated the mechanism of release of the secretory material out of the cell, which was later called “exocytosis.” The first author who described this mechanism of secretion release in the anterior pituitary was Ichikawa (1959), but since his paper was written in Japanese, it was unknown to cytologists outside Japan.
