ABSTRACTThe tertiary structure of the bacterial genome has now been studied to some extent, mostly in the Gram-negative bacterium Escherichia coli, and various small basic proteins called “histonelike proteins” have been described by several authors. In the Gram-positive sporulating bacterium Bacillus subtilis, proteins together with RNA are also essential for the structural integrity of the isolated nucleoid. This work was focused on the identification and characterization of a group of nucleoid-associated proteins displaying some properties shown by the histones, i.e. heat stability, acid solubility and abundance in the cell.
