ABSTRACT

In the last 50 years, a number of methods have been developed to determine the local tissue PO2 in organs such as the skeletal muscle, the liver, and the myocardium. The local O2 pressure provides direct information on the function of the gas exchange in tissue. The “local information” thus obtained supplements the conventional clinical measuring techniques — determination of heart rate, central venous pressure (CVP), cardiac output — which deliver only indirect information on the condition of the microcirculation. In measuring tissue PO2, we make a distinction between direct and indirect measuring methods. More... »
