ABSTRACT

Infection of dicotyledonous plants and many gymnosperms with Agrobacterium tumefaciens leads to tumorous overgrowths, which are commonly called crown galls. When cells from such galls are transferred without contamination by Agrobacteria to simple media for plant tissues, they grow and divide without exogenous supply of auxins and cytokinins. This is in contrast to most normal plant tissues. Hormone-independent, unorganized proliferation in culture has long been the most characteristic property of crown gall cells. More... »
