ABSTRACT

In the last 5 years in particular there has been a rejuvenated interest in the use of cultured plant cells for the study of secondary metabolism. More specifically, this interest has become apparent as a burgeoning of reports describing the immobilisation of plant cells in a variety of putatively inert matrices, and it is primarily this area with which we will deal in this article. Although, as we will see, immobilisation itself may in some cases act to enhance the biochemical productivity of cell cultures, we believe that it is merely one part of a sequence of “manipulations” which, in concert, will result in the in vitro production of high yields of specific secondary metabolites.
