ABSTRACT

The physicochemical mechanisms of brain swelling in pathologic conditions, e.g., during cerebral ischemia, remain obscure. Using excised cat brain tissue in Ringer’s solutions containing various amounts of polyethylene glycol (PEG) 6000 as an osmometer, we demonstrated previously that an ambient osmotic pressure of 578 mmHg was required to suppress the swelling of the brain tissue [4]. Although the observed osmotic pressure was thought to be equal to the colloid osmotic pressure of the intracellular fluid in the brain tissue (πICF), the value might have been overestimated due to the “PEG space” in the tissue sample, which was represented by the extracellular space accessible to PEG molecules. We therefore attempted to reestimate the value of πICF using an electronic osmometer with a rigid semipermeable membrane devised by ourselves [3]. More... »
