ABSTRACT

The real impact of antibiotic therapy during peritonitis is difficult to define since surgical drainage is obviously the most important step in the proper treatment of intra-abdominal sepsis. However, most authors agree with the fact that adequate tissue antibiotic levels may reduce further local invasion of sepsis, secondary septicemia and metastatic abscess formation [1, 2]. Antibiotic therapy must be performed rapidly, empirically, before any bacteriological data, and based upon knowledge of the microbiology of intra-abdominal sepsis. More... »
