ABSTRACT

Single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) is a recently introduced method for measurement of cerebral blood flow (CBF) of inhaled xenon 133 [1–3]. CBF has predominantly been measured in patients with cerebrovascular diseases. These studies have documented that several patients with TIA and a high percentage of patients with stroke have focal low flow areas. These hypoperfused areas are seen both in the acute and in the chronic phase. The evaluation of the tomographic CBF pictures has mostly been based on visual inspection. Calculation and interpretation of side-to-side asymmetries in selected regions require a more detailed analysis of the factors influencing the detection of hypoperfused areas. For this reason a brief description will be given of the tomograph, the algorithm used for calculation of CBF, and some results of studies of linear sources and of various phantoms. More... »
