ABSTRACT

The importance of the results from serological research during the last 30 years, for drawing conclusions concerning phylogenetic relationships among major plant groups are discussed in connection with their role in taxonomy on higher levels. In drawing these conclusions the serological evidence is evaluated in conjunction with that obtained from comparative studies in the fields of macro-morphology, embryology, chemistry (secondary metabolites), and other fields used in the construction of angiosperm classifications. Explanations are presented as to why it has been important to understand the methods and materials used in serological investigations when evaluating their results. When serological investigations include an adequate number of suitable taxa, relevant methods are used, and when the results are considered in conjunction with evidence from the other disciplines, such data can be extremely useful, as is demonstrated by several of the examples which are presented. If only serological data are used, the taxa studied are not representative or too few, and the results are not placed in the context of previous findings, the conclusions can be too far-reaching and either incorrect or inadequate. A review is given of a variety of serological studies distributed over the major groups of the flowering plants, with the emphasis on relationships between families and orders. The review indicates that serological contributions are being incorporated to an increasing degree in the basic evidence for conclusions on relationships between families and family groups, and in the material utilized in constructing modern systems of classification. These data have sometimes supported some views, and contradicted others, in matters of controversy between classification systems.
