ABSTRACT

When one analyzes the large number of children with mental retardation, cerebral palsy, and other developmental defects of the nervous system, a majority are classified as having “congenital defects of the nervous system.” Often the pathological description is one of the end stages of disease with little clue as to the timing or mechanism of the disease process. In this paper we review normal development of the human brain at the cellular level, present selected examples of pathological processes that alter development, and finally propose questions about how knowledge of development may lead to promoting possible mechanisms of repair.
