ABSTRACT

Two theories of the Stoics will be reconstructed systematically and compared with modern concepts. First, the historical antecedents from the Stoa onwards of MONTAGUE’S semantics for noun phrases will be discussed. I will give translations and interpretations of texts by the Stoics LOCKE, LEIBNIZ, the logicians of PORT-ROYAL, FREGE and MONTAGUE. This discussion will confirm and expand LEWIS’ presentation, in his “General Semantics”, of the relation between historically given theories and modern systems. More... »
