ABSTRACT

The laser-induced fluorescence method for product state analysis developed by ZARE et al. has been extensively applied so far to the oxides and halides of the group II and III elements and the OH radical. In this paper we report on the extension of this technique to the measurement of the internal product state distributions of interhalogen molecules formed under single collision conditions in a crossed beam experiment. A first series of experiments has been carried out for three elementary reactions forming iodine monofluoride, which is, from the spectroscopic point of view, the most suitable interhalogen molecule to be studied by laser-induced fluorescence.
