ABSTRACT

Energy yielding substances (carbohydrates, amino acids, fatty acids) are mainly transferred through the placenta to the fetus. M. YOUNG (25) did a series of animal experiments which showed that the transfer of amino acids from the mother to the fetus was an active transport mechanism depending essentially on the maternal blood flow to the placenta. Fetal malnutrition may result from maternal disease such as hypertension, renal disease, toxemia or vascular insufficiency. (1, 10, 14) that can reduce this flow. Intra-uterine growth retardation follows and is more severe because the disease has occurred very early during pregnancy, and there is often a permanent decrease in cell division and the cellular protein content (24, 23). In serious cases, the brain, though protected for a long time, does not escape. More... »
